OH HYUN-SOOK

Oh’s work incorporates the elements of nature, such as the sun, moon, plants, and animals, along with everyday objects like books, bowls, and stationery, reinterpreting the aesthetics of traditional Korean painting.

Oh Hyun-Sook (b.1970) is a folk painting artist based in South Korea. Since the 2010s, she has exhibited
her works in countries such as India, China, Japan, and France.

Oh’s reinterpretation is deeply rooted in the heritage of minhwa (민화, Korean Folk Painting), which emerged during the Joseon Dynasty(1392 - 1910). Minhwa combines everyday objects and natural motifs to symbolise the hopes and beliefs of the time.

Within the paintings, elements like animals, plants, and household items harmoniously coexist, creating layered landscapes that symbolise happiness, faith, peace, longevity, and good fortune. These elements weave together collective desires and the enduring beauty of life. Through her works, Oh Hyun-Sook conveys the hopes and aspirations passed down through generations. The artist aims to bridge us to traditional Korean sensibilities and aesthetic by embodying timeless messages that transcend time and space.
